Expert treatment Biopsies
A biopsy is a simple procedure used to examine unusual or abnormal tissue more closely. Early diagnosis plays an important role in protecting both your oral and overall health.
What is a biopsy?
A biopsy involves removing a small sample of gum or oral tissue so it can be examined under a microscope. This allows Dr. Matheson to identify abnormalities and better understand the nature of a lesion, growth, discolouration, or area of concern.
Biopsies are commonly performed to help diagnose conditions such as periodontal disease, inflammatory conditions, abnormal tissue growth, or oral cancer. In many cases, a biopsy is recommended simply as a precautionary step to rule out more serious conditions and ensure appropriate treatment moving forward.
What to expect
Most biopsies are quick, straightforward procedures performed comfortably using local anesthetic. During the procedure, a small tissue sample is carefully collected and sent to a pathology laboratory for analysis. Depending on the size and location of the biopsy area, a few stitches may occasionally be required. Our team will provide detailed aftercare instructions to help support healing and minimize discomfort afterward. Most patients experience only mild tenderness during recovery and return to normal activities quickly.
Why early evaluation matters
Changes in the gums or oral tissues are not always serious, but they should never be ignored. Persistent sores, unusual discolouration, lumps, tissue thickening, or areas that do not heal properly may all warrant further evaluation. Early diagnosis allows concerns to be identified and treated sooner, often leading to simpler and more effective treatment outcomes. If you or your dentist have noticed an unusual area in your mouth, Halifax Perio can help assess whether a biopsy may be appropriate.
