A heartfelt welcome We’re glad you’re here
Whether you’ve been referred by your dentist or have reached out directly, we’re delighted to welcome you to Halifax Perio. Our team is committed to making every visit comfortable, informative, and stress-free. From your first phone call to your treatment and follow-up care, we’ll take the time to answer your questions, explain your options, and help you feel confident about your oral health.
Getting started is easy
Many of our patients are referred by their dentist or hygienist, but referrals are easy to arrange and self-referrals are welcome. If you have concerns about your gums, missing teeth, or overall periodontal health, simply contact our office. We’ll help determine the best next step and guide you through the process from there.
What to expect
Your first appointment is all about understanding your oral health and creating a plan that’s right for you. Dr. Matheson will perform a comprehensive periodontal examination, review any relevant X-rays or records, and discuss her findings with you in detail.
Together, you’ll review your treatment options and determine the most appropriate path forward based on your needs and goals. Most initial appointments take approximately 45 minutes to one hour, and patients typically experience little to no discomfort during the examination.
With your permission, we will also communicate our findings and recommendations with your dentist and/or physician to help ensure coordinated care and complete records.
After your appointment
Before you leave, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss next steps with our team. You’ll also receive information to help you better understand your diagnosis and treatment recommendations.
If questions arise after you’ve returned home, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re always happy to help, and our website offers additional resources and information you may find useful.
Cancellations
We understand that schedules change and unexpected situations arise. If you need to reschedule an appointment, we kindly ask for at least 48 hours’ notice whenever possible. This allows us to offer that appointment time to another patient who may be waiting for care.
Appointments cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice may be subject to a cancellation fee, and future appointments may require prepayment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I become a patient?
Most of our patients are referred by their dentist or hygienist, but referrals are easy to arrange. Simply ask your dental professional to send us a referral, or contact our office and we’ll be happy to guide you through the next steps.
Is there parking available?
Yes. Paid parking is available right in our building (Vertu building), with access from Birmingham Street. If you’re driving a truck or larger vehicle, nearby street parking is often the easiest option.
Do you take insurance?
We do not bill insurance companies directly, and payment is due at the time of treatment. However, our team is happy to provide the information and documentation you need to submit your claim and make the process as straightforward as possible.
Do you accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan?
Yes. We welcome patients covered under the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). Please note that not all periodontal procedures are covered by the program, and coverage levels can vary. Our team will be happy to help you understand your benefits before treatment begins.
What are the signs of gum disease?
Gum disease is often painless in its early stages, which is why it can go unnoticed. Common signs include bleeding gums, redness or swelling, persistent bad breath, gum recession, sensitivity, spaces developing between teeth, loose teeth, or pus around the gums. If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms, it’s a good idea to speak with your dentist or contact our office for an assessment.
