Expert treatment Tooth Extractions
While preserving natural teeth is always our priority, some situations require extraction to protect your overall oral health. Our team performs extractions carefully, comfortably, and with long-term health in mind.
When is a tooth extraction needed?
At Halifax Perio, saving natural teeth is always our first goal. However, there are situations where removing a tooth may be the healthiest and most predictable option. A tooth extraction may be recommended when a tooth is severely damaged by decay, advanced periodontal disease, fracture, infection, or bone loss. In some cases, teeth may also require removal to support orthodontic treatment, prepare for restorative procedures, or improve long-term oral health.
Before recommending an extraction, Dr. Matheson carefully evaluates the condition of the tooth and surrounding tissues to determine whether the tooth can reasonably be preserved.
What happens during an extraction?
Tooth extractions are performed using local anesthetic, and our team takes great care to make the experience as gentle and stress-free as possible. Throughout treatment, we focus on minimizing discomfort while protecting the surrounding bone and tissues whenever possible.
Depending on the condition and position of the tooth, the extraction may be relatively straightforward or may involve a more surgical approach. In some situations, treatment planning for tooth replacement, such as a dental implant, may begin before or at the time of extraction to help preserve the area for future restoration.
Recovery after an extraction
Most patients recover comfortably following a tooth extraction. Mild swelling, tenderness, and minor bleeding are common during the first few days and generally improve steadily as healing progresses. You’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions to help support healing and reduce the risk of complications. This may include recommendations about eating, activity, oral hygiene, and medications if needed. Healing times vary depending on the complexity of the extraction and your individual health, but most patients return to normal daily activities within a short period of time.
Planning for long-term oral health
When a tooth is removed, it’s important to consider the long-term health and function of your smile. Missing teeth can sometimes affect chewing, bite alignment, and bone support over time. If appropriate, Dr. Matheson will discuss replacement options such as dental implants and work closely with your general dentist to help create a treatment plan that supports lasting oral health and comfort.
